Considering the dire necessity of providing housing accommodation, the PPP has
provided shelter to the deserving and needy/poor Prasi/Irani Zoroastrians at
their various buildings located at Dastur Meher Road. They include the Kapadia,
Anklesaria and Bhedwar buildings, the Talukdar building at M.G. Road and the
Ghaswalla bungalow at Wanorie Bazar. In the recent past, with the magnanimous
donations received from the Trustees of Bai Maneckbai P. B. Jeejeebhoy Deed of
Settlement Fund, PPP has constructed residential buildings on their lands
donated by the Patel family at Lulla Nagar, consisting of 230 spacious flats
and a Community Hall. This is a major boon and relief for the Zoroastrians not
only of Pune but also from various parts of the country including Mumbai and
riot and earthquake affected cities and suburbs of Gujarat such as Ahmedabad,
Surat, Navsari, Bharuch and nearby villages. The families are settled here and
enjoy the surroundings and the young members get the opportunity of being
brought up in Parsi colony. This has encouraged youngsters to marry within the
community and start their family at an early age. This has also increased the
Zoroastrian population in Pune which is second next to Mumbai. While
allotting the flats, the PPP follows strict procedure in the form of
applications, scrutiny, interview, enquiries and paper publication to ensure
that the facility is provided to the deserving candidates.
In addition to the housing facility on Leave and Licence basis provided to the
needy and economically poor as mentioned above, the PPP has taken up
construction of residential flats to be given on long lease basis on the other
part of the land at Lullanagar donated by the late Mr. Khansaheb Aspandiar
Rustom Irani. The applications from the prospective candidates are already
invited and further steps are being taken in the matter. The proposed buildings
will be known as Aspandiar Baug and the basis of allotment for this will be to
any Parsi/Irani Zoroastrians who can pay the cost of the flat.
Another project recently completed by the PPP is the construction of a hostel
for the Parsi/Irani Zoroastrian students who come to Pune for further studies.
By demolishing the Talukdar bulidng which was in a very dilapidated and bad
condition, the new building is constructed again with the kind donation from the
Bai Maneckbai P.B. Jeejeebhoy Deed of Settllment Fund. The students will be
provided with fully furnished hostel facility along with a kitchen and dining room
at centrally located places on M.G. Road. Since the building is in its completion
stages, relevant formalities and modus operandi including charges, etc. are
being worked out by the PPP. This facility will also encourage the students
from various parts to come to Pune and get best of the education as Pune is
known to be the "Oxford of the East".
Poona has got two Towers of Silence (Dokhmas). The Patel Dokhma which is about
200 years old was constructed on the lands donated by the Patel family. Since,
in those days, this dohkma was allowed to be used only for the members of the
Shahenshai and mobed families, another dokhma known as Anjuman Dokhma was
constructed on the land donated by the late Mr. Khansaheb Aspandiar Rustom
Irani, for members of the Kadmi/Irani families. The PPP maintains both the
dokhmas which are now being alternatively used for the Parsi/Irani
Zoroastrians. The PPP has installed Solar Concentrator on the Anjuman dokhma
and another solar concentrator is being installed at Patel dokhma. The
facilities of the Ruwan Bungali and Hearse Van are provided free of cost by the
PPP.
